Original Putu Piring (5 for $2.50) and Chocolate Putu Piring (3 for $3) from Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring.
Though it does not have 'kueh' in its name, I would classify them there due to its similarities to the Chinese Tutu Kueh. Famous in Singapore for said treat, this family owned business started from a single outlet but have opened more, including a catering arm. But they still stick to the traditional way, and ensures quality through the methods and ingredients used. Watching them make my order left me in awe as they worked like clockwork without a break in step, which shows their experience. Listed in the Singapore Michelin Guide with a Michelin Plate, and also featured on Netflix, this was one must-visit spot for a taste of the culture.
Original Putu Piring: 9/10. This was filled with gula melaka, which is the classic flavour. Made to order and served piping hot with grated coconut, having it on the spot was a good decision I made. The high quality filling oozed out from the heat, and had a slightly grainy texture in it as well. The exterior was soft and delicate, and in a good ratio with the filling to achieve a nice balance. A delightful treat that satisfies the sweet tooth, I can also appreciate a small piece of their culture
Chocolate Putu Piring: 7.5/10. I went for this because I cannot resist chocolates. Served similarly to the original ones, but filled with what looked like chocolate sprinkles or shavings, the filling in my first mouthful was still cold, probably because they only just took out the chocolate from the fridge when I ordered. The subsequent bites were nice, but felt like a twist to offer variety. At twice the price, skip this and go for the original, unless you were desperately craving chocolate
The prices and opening hours may vary.
