Toast - YY Kafei Dian 37 Beach Rd #01-01

Butter Kaya Toast Set ($4.20) from YY Kafei Dian.

Considered an old school Hainanese coffee shop, it looks refreshed yet still retains the traditional vibes with its dining atmosphere and furniture from back in the days. They do sell other cooked food and pastries on their display shelves, and you can also enjoy the other local delicacies they have to offer. I was there pretty late, but thankfully managed to get in my order of their toast set.

Toast: 8/10. Using mushroom-shaped buns they bake in-house, I liked the crisp outer layer on the top and sides that housed a soft and fluffy interior. Halved and toasted on a grill also gave the inner surface a nice crisp texture with a mild crunch with an added bitter note. It also gave off the delightful aroma of toast when collected, even though it was served unexposed

Kaya & Butter: 6/10. Though there was quite a generous layer of kaya, it was not sweet and looked to be made in the traditional manner. Its taste was a little mild and did not have as strong a coconut flavour as I expected. The butter added a good savoury taste, but there was only a small knob in between the buns, thus not enough to go around and having pockets of just kaya

Overall: 7/10. The bun was the best part about the toast set, with its wonderful textures making it so enjoyable. Yet another place rich in our local traditions, I am glad it still exists for us to be exposed and reconnect with our unique culture. I would want to visit again earlier in the day to try their other offerings as well.
