Unnamed Carrot Cake Stall - Kimly Coffeeshop, Block 327 Hougang Ave 5

Fried Black Carrot Cake from unnamed carrot cake stall.

Owned and operated by a single aunty, this humble shop has been there since I moved into the area, probably even before. All my years, I probably only ate from her less than twenty times, but had a good impression. Sad to say she no longer sells the mixed version as it has been taped off, so I decided on the black version this time around.

Taste: 7.5/10. I caught a strong whiff of its aroma while she was preparing my order, and delivered onto my plate. Generous with the dark sauce and chili, there was a good balance between the sweet and savory aspects of the dish, albeit some unevenness in the distribution of sauces. There were also some charred bits of dark sauce, adding a mild bitterness to the array of flavours

Texture: 7/10. Also generous with the radish, each mouthful had plenty of it for the little pops of extra crunch, also given by the chopped green onions and charred bits mentioned earlier. These contrasted the scrambled eggs and cake, though the eggs could be runnier and cake a little softer for more contrast in textures. The cake pieces were averaged sized and the components were also in a good ratio for a nice balance

Overall: 7.3/10. There should be good reason why this relatively unknown shop has been around for so long, and quite popular in the area. This serving of carrot cake was loaded with ingredients to give a depth of flavours and textures, and a bit of the X-factor wokhei. If you somehow happen to be in the area during the day, I would recommend trying this hidden neighborhood spot to get your carrot cake fix.
