Song Han Carrot Cake (松漢菜头粿) - Tampines Round Market & Food Centre #01-07

Fried Black And White Carrot Cake from Song Han Carrot Cake (松漢菜头粿).

Located at Tampines Round Market & Food Centre (#01-07), this stall was unique in being the only one (I think) using curry powder in their dishes, and its success can be seen from reviews and queues. An uncle runs the stall singlehandedly, thus a short wait in the early morning as he prepares my order. It sold both versions as a single item at a great deal of $3, with the single flavours starting from $2. A generous serving greeted me, as I looked to taste how the curry worked out.

Taste: 8.5/10. Immediately when I removed my mask I got a big whiff of the curry aroma, which was already a good start. The white version was quite mild in taste, with the curry powder as the main flavour that also brought the heat. The black variation had stronger flavours with the soy sauces, and also elevated by curry powder. Other complementing spices and their homemade chili gave an added kick, and a subtle hint of wokhei rounded off the dish nicely, with the flavours working harmoniously

Texture: 7.5/10. Their homemade kueh were made from scratch, cut into relatively small pieces that gave a soft texture and did not need much chewing. Although the white version was in the cake form, it did not form a crusty exterior for that contrasting crunch which I liked having. That said, the soft textures worked well in the black version, with the soft eggs also soaking up the flavours of the sauce. Both had generous amounts of radish throughout, and their pops made every mouthful enjoyable

Overall: 8/10. In my opinion, the curry powder indeed brought a unique flavour to the dish, but the other factors also need to be done well, which was in what I had. Not sure if it was usually the case, but my plate had two prawns, probably sneaked in from the previous order. Personally I preferred their black version, but I liked being able to have alternating spoonfuls of both flavours. Definitely worth visiting, and order this to find out your preference.
