Tanglin Halt Original Peanut Pancake - Tanglin Halt Market

Peanut, Red Bean and Yam MJK from Tanglin Halt Original Peanut Pancake at Tanglin Halt Market (Stall 16).

Google "Best Mee Chiang Kueh Singapore" and this stall shows up in all listicles from various years, which had to mean something. Started in 1965, everything used to be prepared in-house to stay true to being original. The peanuts are now outsourced due to the owners' age, but standards are still maintained to their expectations. The batter is still prepared by hand from the night before through an arduous process, using natural yeast instead of rising agents and with no preservatives. Pure cane sugar in place of normal sugar resulted in a delightfully fragrant aroma that powered through the styrofoam boxes. In general, the pancakes had a very chewy texture that resembled mochi, very unlike others I have had before. I only got the three flavours below, as the others were not ready when I visited them. Better luck next time~

Peanut: 9/10. This pancake was overloaded with filling held within a cupcake wrapper, which I found myself pouring the leftovers into my mouth. A good grainy texture with a mixture of coarse and fine bits, this contrasted nicely with the chewy pancake. It was more on the sweet side, but still balanced in taste by the bitterness of the roasting. One of the best peanut pancakes I have had

Red Bean: 7.5/10. Supposedly made with red beans imported from China, the flavour was decent and not so sweet, though the red bean scent was relatively mild. It had some chunky bits within the paste, which provided a good contrast in texture, and complemented nicely when paired with the mochi-like pancake

Yam: 8/10. The yam paste was smooth in texture that allowed it to flow, which I preferred compared to a thicker paste. The taste was also nice and distinct, and not too sweet which let the natural flavours of yam shine. This was really well done, also worked great with the chewy texture of the pancake
